The Rust Belt 950

A 950-mile inland & offshore sail, paddle & oar race from Chicago, IL to Buffalo, NY

Motivation

Inspired by the motor-free Race to Alaska and Everglades Challenge, we think the Great Lakes needs its own epic sail, paddle, & oar powered race.

How far can you go on the Great Lakes without entering a lock & dam? How about Chicago to Buffalo?

Below is a preliminary concept.  The GLEC charter members are burning the midnight oil developing draft rules of the race.

Two Divisions

Inshore: Small craft staying within 5 miles of shore

Offshore: Large craft (keelboats, larger multihulls, and Rannoch-style rowboats)

Two Stages

  1. Shakedown cruise from Chicago to Sheboygan (~130 miles)
  2. Sheboygan to Buffalo (~820 miles)

Prizes

  • First Place: All you can eat wings and beer as Buffalo's famous Anchor Bar
  • Second Place: Six months free jelly of the month club
