A 950-mile inland & offshore sail, paddle & oar race from Chicago, IL to Buffalo, NY
Inspired by the motor-free Race to Alaska and Everglades Challenge, we think the Great Lakes needs its own epic sail, paddle, & oar powered race.
How far can you go on the Great Lakes without entering a lock & dam? How about Chicago to Buffalo?
Below is a preliminary concept. The GLEC charter members are burning the midnight oil developing draft rules of the race.
Inshore: Small craft staying within 5 miles of shore
Offshore: Large craft (keelboats, larger multihulls, and Rannoch-style rowboats)
Winter/Spring 2025: GELC Charter members draft race concept and create a full planning committee
Sumer 2025: Finalize Race rules
Fall 2025: Form partnerships with marinas, parks, clubs, and individuals along the course. Identify technology partners (e.g. YB Races) and potential sponsors. Open Registration!
Winter 2025-26: Finalize course checkpoints, and race staffing. Formalize documentation
Spring 2026: Tie up loose ends
July 2026: Race to Buffalo!
